Lifestyle disorders like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer etc. have become major health concern worldwide, especially in the developed and developing countries. WHO’s Department of Health Statistics and Informatics estimates that lifestyle disorders will lead to more than 70% of death by 2030. Lifestyle diseases cannot be cured by allopathic medicines, hence patients need to consume medicines lifelong, which may have some serious side-effects. Hence, people are shifting towards herbal medicines as they are effective, natural and devoid of any long term side effects. Green coffee bean extract is one of the most debated natural supplements which are believed to be useful as a complimentary medicine in lifestyle disorders.
Coffee beans, when collected from the fruits, are green and odorless. Roasting procedure produces dark brown colour as well as typical odour and taste of coffee beans. However, during the roasting procedure, antioxidants (polyphenol and chlorogenic acid) of coffee beans are destroyed. Green coffee extract (GCE) contains abundant amount of chlorogenic acid which is believed to have potential health benefits.

Fat burning properties of green coffee extract is one of the most popular researches these days. Numbers of clinical trials have been performed to evaluate the weight reduction proeprties of green coffee extract in obese and overweight patients. Some researchers have collected and evaluated the results of these studies in their review article published in the scientific journal (Gastroenterology Research and Practice, 2011). Based on the results of the studies it was concluded that use of green coffee extract for weight reduction is rational and should be promoted as a natural alternative. Recently, another clinical trial was published in January 2012 which showed that, 6 week treatment with green coffee extract results in 8 kg reduction in body weight and 2.92 kg/m2 reduction in body mass index. At the end of the study it was concluded that green coffee extract is effective for weight reduction.
Green coffee extract and diabetes
Treatment goal of diabetic patients is control of sugar and lipid levels in the blood. Green coffee extract reduces absorption of glucose (sugar) and triglyceride (lipids) from the intestine. It is also believed that green coffee extract reduces the production cholesterol of cholesterol in our body. Thus, green coffee can be useful supplement of the patients with diabetes.
Green coffee extract and hypertension and heart diseases
Hypertension is the most common life style disorder that may lead to death due to kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Blood pressure lowering effects of green coffee extract have been evaluated in humans. Patients treated with green coffee extract (140 mg/day) showed significantly better improvement in blood pressure and pulse rate, which was not observed in the persons not taking any medicines.
Green Coffee extract and Cancer
Oxidation of DNA is thought to be a major risk factor for the development of cancer. Green coffee extracts being rich in anti-oxidants, can help in preventing certain cancers like pancreatic cancer and endometrium cancer. However, no studies have been conducted in humans that prove that green coffee bean extract cures cancer.
Overall, there are enough evidences of health benefits of green coffee extracts in management of lifestyle disorders. However, the taste of the green coffee extract is not suitable as a beverage and it has to be consumed as an herbal medicine rather than a beverage.
